This here is my first Digital Art piece. *Minor edits made a few months later*
I started with a fairly simple sketch which I scanned in, and opened in Adobe Photoshop CS. I then worked on the colouring, I've done digital colouring before, but it was with lineart, so this is my first digital artwork without the use of lines, working with light, shadow and variations of colour. I decided to keep it monochrome, although looking back, it might have appeared more 3D if I had used different colours, but I'll keep that in mind next time. I've had a few comments already, apparently the neck and chest are too long and the cloak is not quite 'flowing' enough, so yes, I admit, something strange happened with the neck and it's pretty much unfixable now, but seeing as she's an elf, perhaps I can get away with it. The cloak I whipped up pretty quickly, as I didn't think I needed to pay as much attention to it because it was more of a background object, so it ended up looking a little rough and stiff, but I think I may go back and fix the cloak later.
The hardest part of this piece was her face, hands down, I spent ages getting it to look the way I wanted it, but I quite like the result. The easiest, I think was her hand and the lower half of her dress, I modelled my own hand for it, so I could get the shape right and it immediately started working. And the dress became easier as I went along, the lower part just fell into place for me, it was really surprising but also rewarding.
I think I spent about 20 hours on this, perhaps a little less, so it's not too bad for a first time. I'm also very happy with the background, it's incredibly simple and was fairly easy to create but the finished effect I'm very pleased with. Oh, and if you have any questions about how I actually did the colouring, please feel free to leave a comment and I'll get back to you.
But for now I'd thought I'd get some comments and criticism for this piece, so please tell me what you think and don't be afraid to say something's wrong-- it's the only way I can improve!
And finally, I decided to call her Raia at the beginning of the process, so that explains the title. Thanks!
I saw this and...wow...just wow. It's breathtaking. I love the attention to detail, I love the colours and how they seem to flow into each other. How did you do the colouring? I wish I knew how to colour that well! lol
As a minor...tiny...little bit of criticism...the neck seems a bit odd. But overall, looks great!
Thanks Shadowflitter! ^^
Yeah, something went strange with the neck, I didn't notice until it was too late though. XD
I do fairly basic colouring, using the Brush tool in Adobe Photoshop CS. I vary the opacity, flow, size and colour of the brush frequently to blend the colours better.
I usually work with about 40 opacity and 60 flow with a brush size between 7 and 10.
I use the eyedropper tool often to change the colour for more variety.
I work on a fairly large scale, this was about 2500 x 2500 pixels. And I used my graphics tablet, which proved invaluable.
So basically I just overlayed the different colours, with a little help from the Smudge brush for blending, (about 40 strength works well) it was pretty time consuming, but I'm fairly happy with the result.
I also used my own textured brushes to carefully overlay some rough texture on the background.
And choosing strange colours that wouldn't normally appear in the painting, such as purple, pale blue and bright pink and carefully applying them with a VERY low opacity, about 5 Opa. works well, can make amazing changes to the tone of the artwork and really help bring in some variety.
I hope the tips were helpful!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

"Oh, but I am listening."

Darkness...
When everything that you know and love...
Is taken away from you so harshly...
All you can think about...
Is anger, hatred and even revenge...
And no one can save you.
I love that saying, I really appreciate that you think the same about this.

Though to me, this art seems quite old now, and there are so many things I want to change!
Much appreciated though.

But if it is really your first attempt (as complete work) in Photoshop, it is really amazing
